The ESXMIM is a multi-function chassis module that provides integrated bridging and fast packet switching capabilities to the MMAC chassis. The ESXMIM provides maximum throughput across all six Ethernet ports, offering full bandwith connections to servers , high end workstations, and inter-hub links. It employs a dual microprocessor design, providing high-speed switching functionality between multiple Ethernet segments, as well as Cabletron's Bridge/Router and Ethernet Port Interface Modules (BRIMs and EPIMs). The BRIM provides an ATM, FDDI, WAN, Ethernet, or Token Ring port, while the EPIM offers media flexibility by allowing you to select Ethernet interface types.

By using dual processors, ESXMIM is able to deliver comprehensive SNMP management without sacrificing network throughput or bridging performance. The ESXMIM ensures correct data frame delivery and bridge management through support of the IEEE 802.1d and DEC Spanning Tree Algorithms. Other bridging functions include traffic filtering by destination, source, type field, and 64-Kbyte ofset.
